How Tega Cay Started
Tega Cay was founded in 1970 by the Ervin Company on 1,540 acres along Lake Wylie and incorporated as a city on July 4, 1982. The community has grown from roughly 4,000 residents in 2000 to over 14,000 today. For the full history, visit TegaCayHistory.com.
The Tega Cay’s motto became “The Good Life.”
During this time, residents coined the phrase, “The Good Life” and worked to preserve the quality of life Tega Cay residents enjoyed.
Since 1992, Tega Cay has been awarded Tree City USA by the Arbor Foundation. This designation is awarded to City’s that meet standards for urban forestry, including having a tree board, ordinance, and annual community forestry program.
Tega Cay Growth
550 acres were purchased by Newland Corporation in 1999 for the development of Lakeshore, including the construction of the pool in the beach and swim club.
The City continued to grow with a major influx of population between 2000-2008.
In 2007 The Philip T. Glennon Community & Conference Center in Tega Cay, South Carolina, was named in honor of Philip T. Glennon, a highly active community volunteer.
A fresh spurt of growth began in 2011, and the pace continued to increase until 2017.
Tega Cay Today
The 62 acre, 15 year in the making Catawba Park that features baseball/softball fields, multi-purpose fields, trails and a play area opened in 2022.
Another growth spurt began in 2022 as construction began on formally annexed land. Riverfalls and Windell Woods developments began construction in 2024 with an anticipated completion date in 2027. The Grove construction began in 2025 with an anticipated completion of 2030. The Grove is a new mixed use downtown development (formally Game On) which will include single-family residential development, townhomes, and a downtown with live/work housing units on upper levels. The downtown will include open community space to listen to music, play, and gather.
